Italy driving:

  • Motorway signage for directions etc is in green, local is blue.
  • Free car parking spaces marked in white, blue for payment meters, yellow for restricted use only by

authorised individuals e.g. registered hanicapped etc. (generally not tourists!)

  • Speed cameras are little grey boxes by the side of the road

From Malpensa airport: Drive in the direction of Milan, joining the A8 motorway after 15 mins or so. After another 15 mins or so you will see signs for COMO and CHIASSO. Leave the A8 and join the A9 north.

From Linate airport: (not exactly sure … best use a sat nav) Drive north on the A51 and then west on the A4 and then A8 with signs to Como. At the junction around ‘Lainate’ (not to be confused with the airport ‘Linate’ (!!)), take the A9 northwards sign posted COMO and CHIASSO.

Linate

On the A9 northwards, drive for ca. 20 minutes and come to a bank of toll booths. You need €2.10 (Euros) toll (using cash or credit card) before you hit Como. After the toll plaza you will start going through several tunnels that circumnavigates to thewestofComo. Takethelastturnoff before the Swiss border. The turn off is called ‘Como Nord’ (but the sign says ‘Lago di Como’) and appears very soon after exiting one of the tunnels. (Not to be confused by the turning before which is Como Monte Olympino).

Malpensa

After leaving the motorway and after the elevated section of road, go all the way down the hill (just past the Bennet shopping area on the left) you arrive at a 5-way roundabout (fig 1). Take the third exit to Menaggio (blue signs).

Leaving the roundabout (fig 2), in quick succession, go under the flyover and over a sort of iron bridge. Then filter left to Menaggio (signed in blue) (fig 3) and join the dual carriage way (give way) straight into another tunnel on to the main lake coast road (fig 4).

Follow this up to the end then fork right (fig 6) and join the cobbled road (the ‘Green Way’), finally up a very steep incline (fig 7) over a brow and down again. Our place is the first development on the left with the large car park.

After ca. 30 mins (many tunnels) you will reach Argegno, then Colonno (where the roads are now very narrow) and then Sala Comacina. Go almost all the way through Sala Comacina, passing the church on the left, then take a left turn (figure 5) to the upper road (Via Vecchia Regina) which will wind right back and up more or less in the direction you came.

Instructions for returning to Malpensa (or Linate)

Drive back towards Como and leave the dual carriageway with signs to MILANO. The ‘tricky’ roundabout is avoided as the exit slip road directly joins the road up hill (Bennet store now on the right hand side).

After paying the motorway toll, fill up the car at the first petrol station – only a few moments after the tolls. We recommend that you put as much fuel in as possible (check if it’s diesel or petrol!) because there appeartobenoeasytousefuelsuppliesnearertheairport. (Therearesmallun-mannedstationsonthe motorway closer to Malpensa which dispense fixed quantities (€5, €10, €20) of fuel from machines taking bank notes (NO credit/debit cards!) but these are, reportedly, un-reliable)

At Malpensa airport, know which terminal to which you must return the car and which terminal to check-in for your flight. There is a bus between the terminal2 (every 20 minutes or so and takes about 15 minutes).

Have a safe journey home!
